I Just....Wow

I don't even have words to describe how bad this is. If you are a Catholic, please wrap your head in duct tape as a safety precaution before watching this video. That way you have all the pieces when you go to the Emergency Room after your head explodes.

I seriously thought Sean was going to throw up.

The worst was the guitar riff at the genuflection.

And the host-shredding.

#4 said "is that a cookie?"

#3 came up and said "what is this? Is this the bishop's birthday party?"

At least we can rest assured it was invalid, definately not valid matter!

peace.

Your warning wasn't good enough. I think a piece of my skull is now imbedded in my ceiling. I think that might affect the resale value of my house. ;-)

Atrocious!!! No wonder so many think the Church is a joke. They can see this crap online. It makes the whole Church look bad. What about the thousands and thousands of wonderful, worshipful Masses said everyday? They lose out to this vile stuff. SIGH...

I saw this another site - I felt like I had to wash my eyeballs out with soap afterwards.

Mom-
Please help me (and other non-Catholics) to understand what you find to be so troubling with this video. These people appear to joyfully worshipping God while celebrating Communion.

(Not trying to stir up trouble, just curious :))

Thanks,
CJ

Hello,
I am also a protestant, with some knowledge and appreciation for the catholic faith...my dad's side of the family is catholic.. I see that in this video none of your time honored traditions or rituals are followed in the correct manner...however, and in love, shouldn't our relationship with Christ be the most important asspect of our Christion walk...this is what Christ taught when he did not approve of the pharisees acting with an overly religious attitude!

I really appreciate your blog and love to follow it, it is great, but as a protestant I am just giving my view on this!

My problems with this is of course the music, but it is not my preference to have rock music at a Mass.

The worst part of this video for me was watching the people "munch" on our lord. The crumbs could be falling on the floor and it is disrespectful in my eyes to eat the Lords flesh like it is some sort of snack.

I love parties, but a Mass and a party are two different things. I think the Holy Mass should be left alone and if parishioners, Priests and Bishops want to have a worship party after Mass I would be all for that.

I tried to short-hand the answer and it was right, but it wasn't, so let me try again.

The priest in Mass is acting in Persona Christi, meaning that he is acting in the place of Christ. He is recreating the Last Supper, per Jesus' own instructions.

The Last Supper was the Jewish celebration of the Passover which is replete with customs and traditions. Christ chose not to set those aside, but to affirm them as being the correct manner of celebrating the Paschal Feast.

Passover is a solemn occasion, and so we treat our celebration of the Eucharist in the same manner. It is not a wild party, but the solemn re-presentation of our Lord to His Father in sacrifice.

The rubrics or rules of the Mass are there to ensure that we follow the example of Jesus Christ in the manner which He taught us to do so. He said, "Do this in memory of me." He did not say, "Go and do this, but if you get bored, feel free to spice up the music and add a few balloons."

The Sacrifice of the Mass is just that, it is a solemn occasion of sacrifice to God. To turn such a profound moment into a nightclub act is to diminish the profound seriousness of what is going on up on the altar. It is disrespectful to Our Lord to treat His Body and His sacrifice in this manner.

Catholics are not opposed to a party, or good music, or even the balloon release, but they need to be in their proper place. A praise service outside of the Mass would be a better choice for this kind of thing. It should not be taking place in the middle of what the Second Vatican Council called the "source and summit" of our faith.

Thanks for your great explanation...However, I'm still protestant and I don't have the same doctrine as you, but I completly and totally agree with you that we are to take God seriously and never show Him irreverence!! Thanks for the wonderful honest chat, I really appreciate it!

Cardinal Arinze needs to see this! Can anyone send it to his office in the Vatican? I'm serious!!

I was a Protestant before I converted to the Catholic faith. And I would have found this disrespectful even before my conversion.

What were they thinking?

I think Pope Benedict XVI has some wise words when speaking of the liturgy. In a nutshell, the liturgy is God's gift to us that we use to approach him, it isn't something that we own but is God's. In the Old Testament God gave precise written instructions on how worship and liturgy was to occur. That was carried on in the Church in the New Testament days. Say the black, do the red.

We owe God the respect to not make the liturgy ours but let it be His. As to the validity, this Mass has the potential of being valid but illicit.

Matthew S said...

This is Matt again, in reference the validity, if that is wheat bread and proper form was followed it would be valid. It has the appearance of leavened bread which would make it illicit in the Roman rite. You can read more on the specifics here:

Matthew,
Perhaps that's why the good Cardinal looks so unconcerned. It wasn't licit matter, so the whole thing was a sham anyway.
