..and now on to 2010

Did you stay up late last night and watch the ball drop? Good for you. I went to bed early. I need the sleep. I have a 5 month old who seems to be opposed to sleep.

Instead, I got up this morning to work on my resolutions. I'm posting them here so I don't forget them.
  1. Stop being so hard on myself about the way I look.  I used to be the chubby one, now I'm the thin-ish one.  I still weigh the same.  I didn't have to lose weight, just wait for everyone else to get fat.
  2. Start getting rid of all the extra stuff in my house.  It's just stuff and I don't want to have to move it.  (Didn't I tell you?  Dallas...18-24 months.   I hate Dallas.)
  3. Stop telling people "I hate Dallas" when I tell them we're moving.
  4. Find ways to cook healthier meals. I cook like Paula "add a stick of butter to that" Deen, I need to cook like someone a little further north.   Their stuff doesn't taste as good.  Find a way to make Paula Deen healthier.
  5. Get back into running.   There's a lot of satisfaction in knowing you can run 10 miles even if you don't look like you can.  I think I need new shoes first.  Any suggestions for me Imelda?
  6. Write a book.  Y'all keep sending me e-mails asking me to write a book.  I'll give it a whirl, but no promises that it will ever see the light of day.  You already get my blog, isn't that enough?
  7. Write on my blog more often.
  8. Be too busy for the first 3 months of the year for the people who are emotional vampires.  "I'm sorry, I can't talk right now...I'm too busy."   Then pray for them.  I have to find my own sanity before I can help anyone else locate theirs.
  9. Pray more.  With words.
That's my list.  Have anything I should add?  Anything I should take off?  You know I can't do this without you.
     10.  Learn to do this without you.

Olive Oil is great, as is bacon grease-- both pack a lot of flavor with less used. Of course, I only like a very moderate amount of butter, so I may be the wrong one to speak up.....

I have heard that substituting mushed fruit (apple sauce, pureed whatever) during baking works well, though I haven't tried it.

(My idea of "cooking healthier" is to have bags of frozen veggies in the fridge, and add them to every pot-recipe other than chili.)

Is it worth it to be skinnier/"healthier", if you hate the food you eat?

This, of course, comes from a GRITS, who throws a stick of butter into everything (you do *not* want to know how many sticks of butter went into that pound cake). I am Paula Deen's redheaded North GA cousin (not by blood, just by cookin' style). We have a mason jar of lard in our fridge. I save bacon grease (also in the fridge, different container). And buy butter 10lbs at a time. I figure it is better than that nauseating "I Can't Believe Someone Thinks This Tastes Like Butter" garbage.

Lots of veggies (I just threw some shredder zucchini from this summer, into our last batch of spaghetti sauce). Lots of food made from scratch. That's as far as I'm gonna get towards "healthier" eating, probably. Well, at least, as close as DH will let me.

Note: We raised our own pigs, so that lard is not hyrdogenated nasty stuff from the store. Our bread is whole wheat, with no HFCS. My children drink milk sparingly, and drink TONS of water. Juice is a treat. So lest you think my children subsist on Mountain Dew, Doritos, and cheap hamburger, I assure, they do not. :-)

Yes! Do try to write that book. And I LOVE your blog. I also totally agree with your #1 as that applies to me also. and your #8 is good too, I have a few vampires but I am going to stop being a vampire also. Happy New Year! May our Dear Lord be more loved this year than last. -Loretta in MI

A few thoughts - have you checked out Flylady? It's a bit overwhelming at times, but if you can take it in, process the info and adapt it to your life, it is pretty helpful. Also, the service "Saving Dinner" aka the Menu Mailer - A dietitian(sp?) send you a menu (6 days worth) and an itemized grocery list every week. Food is nutritious and family friendly. Nutrition info is included with each menu. My family and I have found it very useful. I no longer have to wonder, "what's for dinner" because I know what I have lined up....
I am new to your blog, but I really love what I see.
And don't worry about the move - it's not worth the energy. I lived in Texas for five years as a child and I LOVED it. Hope you'll be at peace with it before you get there.
Best wishes
Sara

#10 "Learn to do this without you." Why? That is what friends (even blogging acquaintances) are for - to help each other. Email address is on my profile page - feel free to write. Might not be any words of wisdom in the answer, but know that there is someone who will listen.

Your blog writing is such a gift to us. Thank you so much.

May your new year be full of wonder and happiness. Maybe Dallas won't be so bad.

Let me know when you are not busy, and we'll have lunch.

We'd love to visit you when we visit relatives in Dallas. I like Dallas but have never lived there. It is a little warmer there. Now, if you were moving to Abilene....yeesh...been there, done that, never want to do it again.

Chin up. Still love your blog.

Can't seem to remember the "password", so I'm anonymous today.

Why do I love that you "hate" Dallas? Not sure, but probably because I'm from Austin! I am not really qualified to make a judgment, except that someone once told me that people in Dallas dress up to go anywhere. That is enough to make me leery of the place. :):)
At least you will be back in Texas--long live homeschooling freedoms!

Paige, I'm fond of Texas and want to be back there, but South Texas is better.

BTW, we have the same homeschooling freedoms in Oklahoma.
