Homeschooling with Dad

Yesterday, #5 pointed out a roly-poly to his father.  "Dad.  Look at this guy."

They watched it crawl around for a few minutes when #3 picked it up and let it crawl on his hand and arm.  When they put him back down their father remarked, "Yup, he's pretty cool.  Did you know that someday when you die, he's one of the bugs that will eat you?"

Did this result in an "ooh, COOL!!!" or an "eeewwwwww....."?

LAUGHING OUT LOUD. Too funny not to "shout".

"The worms crawl in. The worms crawl out. The worms play pinochle on your snout." (Part of an old song that my grandmother taught me.)

It received a serious look and a nod of the head.

That's what makes dads cool. They are different from moms and certainly have a different perspective when they get a chance to offer their teaching abilities to their kiddos.

I notice when my husband pinch hits for me that he is really a sink or swim kind of teacher. I'm careful, slow, deliberate and I help the kids find the answer. He lets them wallow around and doesn't help them at all. He is patient to wait around until they come to the correct conclusion, though. Viva le difference!

Love, Suzanne

Am I the only one that doesn't know what a roly-poly is? What is it?

I think it's one of those "potato bugs" - a grey little insect that curls up into a ball like an armadillo.

BTW - nice new look, Mom! Of the blog, that is! ;-)
