What Possessed Me

I've gotten a couple of comments and emails from readers who are confused a bit by the purple hair.  Let me begin by assuring my male readers that this is the last "hair" post for a while, but women want to know these things.

It all began a week and a half ago when I went to an all girls dinner party thrown by my cousin.  She has these every three months and calls them "Eat, Drink and Gab."  They are a hoot and I highly recommend coming if you are fortunate enough to be invited, or throwing your own if you aren't.

There was this brilliant, gorgeous, funny lady at the party whose chocolate brown hair sported crayola red stripes.  It was so fun and so unexpected.  I was obsessed.  It was all I talked about all night. (I did talk about other stuff, but I talked about her hair A LOT.)  I talked about it so much that people started asking my why I didn't have something similar.  I laughed and explained that as a conservative, homeschooling, Catholic mommy...well, I just might be thrown out of our clique if I showed up with something so avant garde.

When I got home, I told my husband about the fun of an all girl dinner party.  I'm not sure he listened to all of it, but when I mentioned her hair and laughed about the suggestion that I try it..then he listened.

"Why not?" He asked me.  I told him of my identity as a Catholic, blah, blah, blah mom and he just shrugged.  "Your friends are your friends and will love you no matter how you look," he reasoned.  " The people who know you well will not be surprised at all.  Why do you care about the other people?"   Have I mentioned that I love him?

Armed with new confidence, I called my hair girl.  "I don't recommend crayon red," she said as my heart sank.  "It fades really quickly and I don't think you'd be happy with it.  Have you ever thought of purple?"  Yippee!  Here's the person in charge of my hair not thinking I've gone crazy.  "I think you'd look hot with purple hi-lights."

So, long story short-er, I did it.  It took three hours of bleaching, coloring, cutting and styling and when she spun the chair around....I laughed out loud.  I was that happy with it.  I no longer looked like the stereotype of stay-at-home mother hood (a look I work very hard to pull off).  I looked like a happier me.

What does the Hubs think?  He walked into the kitchen, and I was so nervous about what he'd say.  Silly me.  He smiled and said, "You did it.  It looks great."

We went out for dinner that night for our anniversary, and I asked him if he really like it.  He smiled his little grin and said, "You look like the girl I fell in love with."  I feel like her, too.  She was quirky and fearless, and I've been missing her, more than I knew.

I gave him my best come-hither look and asked, "Ever gotten lucky with a girl with purple hair?"

"Not yet."

I have a married Catholic friend who did green streaks, so I'm inured.

Quirky, yes.

The main thing is you and your Computer Guy are happy with it. It's all good. :)

Yes! Just a little joyful spontaneity, I get it!

What does being Catholic have to do with your hair color, anyway!

I think it's fun. Good for you for going for it, I'm too much of a chicken (though I do have a tattoo).

Here's the real question. Are you going to be able to let your kids do 'interesting' things with their hair?

@Maurisa- It's more the blah, blah, blah mom part that the Catholic.

@Kathy- It's only hair. It grows out and can be easily changed. Tattoos are another matter entirely. :)

I am with Computer Guy, I love the hair. And feel free to keep posting about hair. Love women's hair. Just ask Maurisa, "IT's all about the hair"

ps-but as a dude I can't imagine spending 3 hours to have my hair done. Not that I have that much any more. 10 minutes tops is all I want to spend in a barber's chair

I can completely relate to this. I have trouble remembering life before kids and marriage. Not that I'd trade any of it or make different choices, but you do have to stay true to who you are and not let your role in life define you so much. By the way, I love your new hair, it is fun, unexpected and fresh, just like you, and as Catholics we are duty bound to live in a joyful manner that is a reflection of God's rejoicing in His creation. I just may have to exchange my boring 'dark blonde' haircolor for a more lively red shade... -Loretta

I love it!!! A fun, non-permanent change? What is wrong with that?

Me, I'm just working up to getting some blonde highlights sometime but I'm a redhead and technicolor highlights would probably be a bit much :D

I'm the uber-conservative among my local friends. My BLF (best liberal friend) wants me to go with her when she gets her next tattoo just so she can get a picture of me in a tattoo parlor :D

Hehe, now you've got me thinking maybe I will try some dye-work to make my hair the auburn-red it was when I was a kid.....

This is why I love this blog.

You are the paradox that I hope that I am.

Catholic, Conservative, Traditional, with a Guggenheim twist.
