God Has a Sense of Humor -- Do You?

The longer I blog, the more I read, the more I become convinced that there's an underground network of Christian people who have decided that laughter is a sin.  I've been chastised for my sarcasm, seen others ridiculed for their satire, and read the comments of too-many-to-count who seem to think that faith equals no sense of humor.

Well, I hate to break it to those people, but God's funny.  It's often a dry sense of humor which makes you question if He was serious or not, but sometimes it's flat out slapstick....and the sarcasm?  I love it!  Do you realize that if sarcasm were a sin there'd be no Irishmen in Heaven?  It's a fact.  I know it is. Trust me.  I've met quite a few Irishmen

Don't those holier-than-thou types read their Bibles?  They never read where Batholomew says of Jesus "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?"  Jesus' friends were funny.  If you really read what they're talking about as they're following Him around...there's a lot of joking going on.  So why do these modern day Christians think there's something wrong with laughing?

'Cause God's funny.  Only a guy with a sense of humor could think this up
Amorphophallus titanum - roughly translates to "giant misshapen male genitalia" proving that scientists are funny, too
Isn't it gorgeous?  Deep purple and huge...it can grow to be over 10 feet high.  It looks like there need to be Oompah Loompas circling it and dancing.  I'd almost love one in my yard.

Almost.

Because it smells like rotting flesh.  Yes, that's the corpse flower.  It might be pretty, but you'd better bring your gas mask when you go to see it.
He's poking fun at us. I know He is because it's crazy rare and only blooms once every couple years, so when it does people will line up for hours to go see it.  Hours in the heat of summer to see something which makes you want to retch?  I'm pretty sure the joke's on us!

"Ah," they'll say, "it's not really funny.  It's an adaptation for............."

What? I stopped listening.  I have no time for that kind of nonsense.  And it is nonsense.  What kind if Heaven do the non-laughing ones look forward to?  It sounds like boring afternoons at my Grandma's house listening to the clock tick away the painfully slow seconds while Grandpa snored in his easy chair.  Although come to think of it......they had no air conditioning in South Texas......in the Summer......maybe it's a better example of someplace else.  (Not that I didn't like my grandparents, non-humorous people, but those were the most boring afternoons ever.)

I don't know who they're wanting to hang out with for all Eternity, but I want to hang with the guy who made this stuff
You can see his brain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
His hands are bigger than his head. BIGGER THAN HIS HEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!! (I think that red thingy is his head. How do you tell?)

He spits blood from his eyeballs.  Proving, I'm sure, that God wanted me to chase my shrieking brother around the yard shooting eyeball blood at him.

One of my favorite funny faces.

And then there's this thing....I have no clue what it is, but it looks like what God does with the leftover bits.
It's an animal.  I swear it is.  It's totally gross looking but I can't stop staring at him....her.......it

So those of you laughing along, keep yucking it up.  God wants us to laugh or he wouldn't have given us so many reasons.

For those of you shaking your heads in disapproval or readying your fingers to let me know all the ways I'm wrong.........I can take it.  I'm all ready for you.  I put on my big girl panties this morning and everything.  But first can you answer a couple questions for me?  What does your Heaven look like, and why on Earth would I want to go there?

I wasn't too rough on you, was I?  Need a hug?
There, there....it's all better now.

I normally lurk but I just have to comment for once.

I really do think God has a sense of humor, case in point the platypus. That is one of the silliest looking animals around and God was the one to design it. So yes, he has a sense of humor.

Quite a few who come to my place fit your description. It's very sad. Who doesn't want to laugh? Joy, after all, is one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit.

Speaking of funny - I think it's comical that male spiders have to dance for their booty time or they get eaten. Sure, it could be evolution, but I like to think that God's messing with the minds of spiderologists...or whatever they're called.

I've had to work hard to keep from bursting out laughing during readings at mass some days. There's some hilarious stuff - especially when Jesus is tagging along on the road after he had risen. Good stuff.

And then there is the fashion sense (NOT) of my 7th grader. God definitely knew he would create smiles for others.

Have you ever read anything by or heard Fr. James Martin speak? He is hilarious and focuses on just this issue of needing to have a sense of humor. "Between Heaven and Mirth" is one of his books :)

This post reminds me of the Protestant heaven vs. Catholic heaven episode of the Simpsons. Gold, I tell you. Pure comedic gold! If you've not seen it, enjoy: http://es.gloria.tv/?media=93470

I usually lurk as well....but I had to comment on this one :)

The longer I live, the more sure I am that God has a sense of humor.....and sometimes I'm pretty sure it's aiming at me! :) Love this post!!

It seems that an opportunity to finally comment has presented itself.

By your initial reasoning, His face in roasted bread is also true and an evidence of his humour. But no, it's mostly just us projecting what we think onto other things. I agree with you about laughing, but I can't see that there's tons of jokes going on anywhere in the Gospels. In fact, I'd think it odd if it did since no unnecessary information should be contained in them, which is why scholars always reacted to Tobias dog, for example. We still don't know what that means.

The Nazarene comment displays what a lowly place Nazrene and those living there was seen as, which in length proves God's humility that he was pleased to be called the Nazarene.

If I can speak plainly, I believe the reason a lot of people react to you, and I have never commented earlier, is because you lack the virtue of moderation which enables you to often step over the line and become immodest and vulgar. It is an avatar of the "give me a bite and I'll eat the whole arm"-attitude, which is prevalent in Catholics today: it's allowed? It's not evil? Well then, I shall indulge myself in it until I, or rather my soul, suffocate.

I say this because I suffer from the same, which is one reason why I haven't started a blog. I know where it will lead. On a military evaluation not long ago, some people had written that I was "sarcastic or ironic to the point of exhaustion." It's my way to deal with things, and to make hardships bearable. I think we are the same, and it's far more justified for you because your hardships are infinitely greater than mine, a bachelor. But the difference between you and me is that I admit my fault, and I don't try to lash out on other people who react to it by, among other things, calling them "holier-than-thou's".

I'm sure most people who comment, including me, are even worse themselves in real life, but this is a blog, it's public, and it claims up front to be explicitly Catholic. It is therefore a representative of everything we believe. You should, then, hold yourself to a higher standard.

Oh, God has a sense of humor alright! Even in church. Here's evidence: http://ceciliamschwartz.wordpress.com/2010/06/14/adoration-story/

I love how much God makes me laugh!

God most certainly has a sense of humor and has given us one as well. A good sense of humor is the only thing than can get one joyfully through tragedy and sadness. Yes, prayer and grace is crucial but people who can't laugh at the absurdity of it all are going to be very sad and bitter indeed. Laughter gives me hope, and hope keeps me laughing.

I've been called unchristian for telling simple jokes. People are nuts. God most definitely has a sense of humor. You can see it quite well in my life.

Love this post! Just last week I was all over my kids to be good in front of their uncle the priest, handing out stern looks and punishments and he just laughed at them and teased them into better moods. Showed me to lighten up and have a little fun for a change. Oh, and on the subject of funny plants, last summer we had mushrooms in the back yard their latin name means 'dog penis'... and yes they look exactly like that. -L

fugerunt - If that is your real name..... You're not Irish are you?

Why would you wait to comment? This is an all skate everybody-in-the-pool kind of place. You were waiting for an opportunity? There's no need to be shy around here.

What Bible are you reading? The Jesus I know used humor and irony as well as plain truth to teach. You seem to have missed the humor part. It's there. I promise you.

St John Bosco told his students "I want no long faced saints."

St Philip Neri was well known for his practical joking and laughter.

In all things there should be moderation excepting only love of God and joy. The one brings the other. The love of God should fill you until the joy bubbles up out of you and can not be contained. (I said that. Don't go looking for the quote elsewhere.)

As for the rest, you are welcome to your opinion, except on one thing. Nowhere have I claimed to be representative of what you believe. I can only speak for myself and my own beliefs. I am Catholic and faithful to the Magisterium. Amen.

Fugerunt,

I just have one thing to say:

"I'm not a man who constantly thinks up jokes. But I think it's very important to be able to see the funny side of life and its joyful dimension and not to take everything too tragically. I'd also say it's necessary for my ministry. A writer once said that angels can fly because they don't take themselves too seriously. Maybe we could also fly a bit if we didn't think we were so important."

Wanna know who said it?? Pope Benedict XVI.

Want another one?

"The profound joy of the heart
is also the true precondition for 'humor';
and so 'humor,'
under a certain aspect,
is an indicator,
a barometer of faith."

(Benedict XVI)

Just in case you were to question the Catholicness of a sense of humor...

OK, but you DO need to watch the sarcasm. It really is poison to a family when the parents are sarcastic to the children, and the children to each other. (sarcasm between consenting adults, in private, is another thing!)

Humor is GREAt and I enjoyed Fr. Martin's "Between heaven and Mirth" as well. He says on pg 165 "Used correctly, humor builds. Abused, it destroys." also (same page) "Err on the side of safety when it comes to sarcasm."

I was raised in a sarcastic household. In my early marriage I was quite sarcastic and caused my husband a lot of pain. I'm sensitive, now, to that type of humor that belittles.

Of course God has a sense of humor. Who else would make the refrigerator or car or washing machine up and die just when you have finally decided you can afford to go on a vacation?

Although these may be hybrids - check these out. Yes, God has a sense of humor. http://photobucket.com/images/pecker%20Peppers/

Love your rant - you are so right. :)

I knew God had a sense of humor the minute I saw a baboon for the first time - it has a target on its rump for goodness sake!

These are great pictures! What was that mutant looking thing at the end though? Are you sure WE didn't create that?

Fed- Sarcasm is not a sin. Some people have a difficult time with it, yes, but some people have even more of a difficult time without it.

Please don't project your own issues with sarcasm onto others.

I love your blog, and lurk a bit. Hardly ever comment but this one hit home with me. My dear sister is so humorless, so afraid she won't live up to being a "good Christian" and such a revisionist of history (hers) that I can no longer share much of anything with her. picture of our (deceased) mom holding a wine glass? cropped. Picture of us in 70's homemade halter tops? not so much. A friend once had a picture of a laughing Jesus, and I loved that image of Him. I shared it with another friend, and got a lecture. I think my own sense of humor is a gift from Him to keep me from going crazy. Keep on being you. We love it!
